Land Rover is currently part of the Ford Premier Automotive Group, and the production faciltiy is located at the Lode Lane site in Solihull, originally built to manufacture aircraft engines during the Second World War. Currently all Land Rover vehicles are produced on this site.
The tour includes areas such as Body In White, where body shells are welded together by robots under CNC control, and Trim & Final Assembly, where the painted car shell is transformed into the finished vehicle along a continuous moving track. This is the ultimate in Lean Manufacturing, employing Kamban. Each ‘cell’ of track workers perform their manual or semi-automated tasks in an allocated time and are responsible for their own quality assurance before passing vehicles on to the next cell.
