  • Land Rover Solihull
Land Rover is currently part of the Ford Premier Automotive Group, and the production faciltiy is located at the Lode Lane site in Solihull, originally built to manufacture aircraft engines during the Second World War. Currently all Land Rover vehicles are produced on this site. The tour includes areas such as Body In White, where body shells are welded together by robots under CNC control, and Trim & Final Assembly, where the painted car shell is transformed into the finished vehicle along a continuous moving track. This is the ultimate in Lean Manufacturing, employing Kamban. Each ‘cell’ of track workers perform their manual or semi-automated tasks in an allocated time and are responsible for their own quality assurance before passing vehicles on to the next cell.
  • LDV
LDV provides the opportunity to see the vehicle manufacturing process from start to finish within a relatively short visit. From rolled steel coming into the press shop, visitors will see how this steel is pressed into body panels then delivered into the manufacturing hall next door to the press shop for welded assembly. Here a mixture of high tech automation and hands on process produces a ‘body in white’ bare metal bodyshell. A short walk to the paintshop where state of the art robot sprayers apply paint to the body shells. Finally a look at the trim and final assembly process where engines, seats, windows, etc., are fitted.
